ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS

Healing Beyond the Surface

We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

About Addiction Treatment

Addiction is a complex and serious disease that involves a wide range of behaviors centered around the compulsive use of a substance. Over time, the substance begins to override normal brain function, consuming an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and daily actions. This cycle is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors that reinforce continued use despite negative consequences.

Addiction is commonly characterized by one or more of the following behaviors: loss of control over substance use, persistent cravings, and continued use despite harmful physical, emotional, or social effects. While a person may develop physical dependence—experiencing withdrawal symptoms when use stops—or tolerance—needing increasing amounts to achieve the same effect—without being addicted, most individuals with addiction experience both tolerance and dependence.

Detoxification

Athena offers a range of addiction treatment options tailored to the severity of the disorder and the specific substance involved. The first step in treatment is often acute detoxification, a medically supervised process that allows the body to safely eliminate drugs or alcohol.

Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable and, in some cases, life-threatening, depending on the substance used. For this reason, detox must be managed with the appropriate level of medical care. Medications may be used to gradually taper individuals off certain substances while minimizing withdrawal symptoms and reducing health risks.

For example, low-dose benzodiazepines may be used during alcohol withdrawal to prevent severe complications such as seizures, while medications such as Suboxone or naltrexone may be used to support individuals detoxing from opioids under medical supervision.

Therapy and Treatment

Once the substance has been cleared from the body, treatment shifts to therapy focused on long-term recovery. This phase helps individuals develop healthy coping strategies, identify triggers, and reduce the risk of relapse.

In many cases, substance use masks an underlying mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. As sobriety is established, these conditions often become more apparent. Effective treatment addresses both the substance use disorder and any co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously.

Depending on an individual’s needs, treatment may take place in a residential (inpatient) setting or through an intensive outpatient program. Sovereign Health’s clinical team carefully evaluates each patient’s history, symptoms, and goals to determine the most appropriate level of care.

Continuing Care

Athena offers a wide range of therapeutic approaches across all levels of care to support sustained recovery. These may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individual counseling, group therapy, anger management, equine therapy, art therapy, and other evidence-based and experiential modalities. Together, these therapies help individuals develop the skills and confidence needed to maintain a healthy, sober lifestyle beyond treatment.

A Whole-Person Approach to Recovery

Whether an individual is struggling with prescription medications, alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana, or illicit substances such as PCP or LSD, Sovereign Health provides comprehensive, individualized treatment. Our approach goes beyond symptom management to support healing of the mind, body, and spirit.

In addition to clinical care, patients benefit from balanced nutrition, physical activity, cognitive remediation, and holistic therapies designed to promote overall wellness and long-term stability.
