ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS

Healing Beyond the Surface

We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

Vicodin (Hydrocodone)

Vicodin is a prescription pain medication that combines hydrocodone, an opioid painkiller, with acetaminophen (paracetamol). It is commonly prescribed for moderate to severe pain and can be safe when used exactly as directed under medical supervision. However, like other opioid medications, Vicodin carries a high risk of misuse, dependence, and addiction.

Because Vicodin affects the brain’s reward system, repeated use can lead to tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms. For this reason, it was reclassified as a Schedule II controlled substance in 2014.

Vicodin Abuse and Risks

Vicodin is most often abused by taking higher doses than prescribed or using someone else’s prescription. In more severe cases, pills may be crushed and snorted or injected—methods that greatly increase the risk of overdose.

People may misuse Vicodin to:

  • Escape emotional or physical pain

  • Experience feelings of relaxation or euphoria

  • Avoid withdrawal symptoms after dependence develops

Large doses can dangerously slow breathing, especially when combined with alcohol or other drugs. Chronic misuse also increases the risk of serious liver damage due to acetaminophen toxicity.

Signs of Vicodin Addiction

Common warning signs include:

Difficulty focusing or thinking clearlyNausea, vomiting, or low energy

Mood swings and irritability

Using Vicodin to avoid feeling sick or uncomfortable

Obsessive efforts to obtain more medication, including “doctor shopping”

Withdrawal symptoms may resemble severe flu-like illness and often drive continued use.

Treatment for Vicodin Addiction

Vicodin addiction is treatable with professional care. Effective recovery requires addressing both the physical dependence on opioids and the psychological factors that contribute to misuse.

At Athena Behavioral Health, Vicodin addiction treatment begins with medically supervised detox when appropriate, followed by individualized therapy that addresses addiction and any co-occurring mental health conditions. Our evidence-based and holistic approach helps patients stabilize, rebuild healthy coping skills, and reduce the risk of relapse.

If you or a loved one is struggling with Vicodin use, Athena Behavioral Health is here to help. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options and take the first step toward recovery.
