Bath Salts (Synthetic Cathinones)
Bath salts—also known as synthetic cathinones—are dangerous, human-made stimulant drugs derived from chemicals found in the khat plant. They are often misleadingly sold as “bath salts,” “plant food,” or “herbal products” to avoid regulation. Despite the name, these substances are not related to legitimate bath products and are extremely hazardous.Chemically similar to amphetamines, methamphetamine, and MDMA (ecstasy), bath salts produce intense stimulation and euphoria. Unlike natural khat, synthetic cathinones are far more powerful and unpredictable. Because there is no standard formula, reactions can vary widely and may include severe paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior.
Common symptoms include:
-
Paranoia and hallucinations
-
Panic attacks and extreme agitation
-
Violent or erratic behavior
-
Increased sex drive
-
Kidney failure and muscle breakdown
Chronic use can lead to intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as depression, anxiety, tremors, sleep disturbances, nausea, and paranoia.
Effects and Symptoms of Bath Salts Abuse
Bath salts entered the U.S. drug scene around 2009 and are commonly injected, smoked, snorted, or swallowed. They are sometimes mixed into club drugs used at parties or raves. These substances dramatically raise body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure, increasing the risk of overheating, organ failure, and death.
Treatment for Bath Salts Abuse
Bath salts can have powerful effects on the brain, sometimes comparable to cocaine but significantly stronger. Because of the risk of psychosis, dehydration, and medical complications, professional treatment is strongly recommended.
At Athena Behavioral Health, treatment for bath salts abuse begins with medically and nutritionally supported detox to safely stabilize the body. From there, individuals transition into a personalized treatment program that addresses both the physical effects of the drug and the underlying psychological factors driving use.
Treatment plans may include behavioral therapies, trauma-informed care, holistic services, and support for co-occurring mental health conditions to promote long-term recovery.
If you or someone you love is struggling with bath salts or synthetic stimulant use, Athena Behavioral Health offers compassionate, evidence-based care. Contact our 24/7 helpline to learn more.
