Healing Beyond the Surface

Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

Ketamine

Ketamine is a synthetic dissociative anesthetic used in both human and veterinary medicine. Medically, it is used to induce anesthesia and, in controlled settings, may be administered in low doses to treat severe depression or suicidal ideation. Outside of medical supervision, however, ketamine is frequently abused for its dissociative and hallucinogenic effects and is commonly known by street names such as Special K, K, or Kitty.

Because ketamine is odorless, colorless, and can impair awareness and movement, it is also widely misused as a date-rape drug. Recreational users often seek a dissociative state known as a “K-hole,” which involves an intense out-of-body experience and significantly increases the risk of overdose.

Effects and Dangers of Ketamine Abuse

Ketamine can be swallowed, snorted, smoked, or mixed into drinks. Its effects occur quickly and wear off rapidly, often leading to repeated use and rapid tolerance. Even a single use can result in overdose or serious complications.Common signs of ketamine abuse include:Confusion, memory loss, and impaired judgmentHallucinations and dissociationRapid heart rate and chest painNumbness and reduced sensitivity to painDifficulty thinking or learningBladder and urinary problemsAggression, agitation, or anxietyOverdose symptoms may include shallow or labored breathing, loss of coordination, muscle twitching, nausea, vomiting, impaired vision, and cognitive decline. In severe cases, ketamine overdose can result in brain damage or death.

Treatment for Ketamine Addiction

Ketamine disrupts normal brain chemistry and can cause lasting cognitive and psychological damage. Effective treatment must address both the physical effects of the drug and the underlying emotional or mental health factors driving use.

At Athena Behavioral Health, ketamine addiction treatment begins with medically supervised detox when appropriate, followed by individualized care that may include cognitive behavioral therapy, brain-focused therapies, trauma-informed treatment, and holistic support. Our programs are designed to restore brain health, reduce relapse risk, and support long-term recovery.

If you or a loved one is struggling with ketamine use, Athena Behavioral Health offers compassionate, evidence-based care. Contact our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options.
