ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS
Healing Beyond the Surface
We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.
What is Addiction?
Addiction is a serious and complex disease that involves a wide range of behaviors centered around the compulsive use of a substance. Over time, the substance alters normal brain function, consuming an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and daily activities. Addiction is influenced by a combination of environmental, genetic, and psychosocial factors that reinforce continued use despite negative consequences.
Addiction is typically characterized by one or more of the following behaviors: impaired control over substance use, compulsive use, persistent cravings, and continued use despite physical, emotional, or social harm. While a person may develop physical dependence—meaning withdrawal symptoms occur when use stops—or tolerance—requiring larger amounts to achieve the same effect—without being addicted, most individuals with addiction experience both tolerance and dependence.
What is a Detox?
Athena Behavioral Health offers multiple addiction treatment options based on the severity of the condition and the substance involved. For many individuals, the first step in recovery is acute detoxification, which allows the body to safely eliminate drugs or alcohol.
Depending on the substance, withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable and, in some cases, life-threatening. For this reason, detox must be carefully managed under the appropriate level of medical supervision. Medications may be used to gradually taper individuals off substances while reducing withdrawal symptoms and minimizing health risks.
For example, low-dose benzodiazepines may be used during alcohol withdrawal to prevent severe complications such as seizures, while medications such as Suboxone or naltrexone may be utilized to support individuals withdrawing from opioids under a structured detox program.
How does Therapy and TreatmentWork?
Once substances have been cleared from the body, treatment focuses on therapy and long-term recovery. This phase helps individuals develop healthy coping strategies, recognize triggers, and build tools to prevent relapse.
In many cases, substance use masks underlying mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. As sobriety is established, these conditions often become more apparent. Effective treatment addresses both substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously.
Depending on the severity of addiction and individual needs, treatment may take place in a residential (inpatient) setting or through intensive outpatient care. Athena Behavioral Health’s clinical team carefully evaluates each individual’s history, symptoms, and current behaviors to determine the most appropriate level of care.
How we help with Long Term Care?
Athena Behavioral Health offers a wide range of therapeutic approaches across all levels of care to support long-term recovery. These may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individual therapy, group therapy, anger management, equine therapy, art therapy, and other evidence-based and experiential modalities. Together, these services help individuals develop the skills needed to maintain a healthy, sober lifestyle beyond treatment.
A Whole-Person Approach to Recovery
Whether an individual is struggling with prescription medications, alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana, or illicit substances such as PCP or LSD, Athena Behavioral Health provides comprehensive, individualized care. Our treatment philosophy focuses on healing the whole person—not just the addiction.
In addition to clinical therapy, Athena emphasizes balanced nutrition, physical activity, cognitive remediation, and holistic support to promote long-term wellness and sustainable recovery.
