Healing Beyond the Surface
We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.
Cocaine
Cocaine is a powerful and highly addictive stimulant derived from the coca plant, commonly known as coke, blow, or snow. When snorted, smoked, or injected, cocaine produces intense feelings of energy, confidence, and euphoria by rapidly increasing dopamine levels in the brain.
Although once used medically as an anesthetic, cocaine’s high abuse potential and severe physical and psychological effects led to its prohibition. Today, cocaine is often sold as a white powder or in its crystallized form known as crack cocaine, frequently mixed with other substances that increase overdose risk.
Effects and Risks of Cocaine Abuse
Cocaine’s effects are short-lived, which often leads to repeated use and rapid addiction. Even occasional use can cause serious health consequences.
Long-term cocaine abuse can result in:
-
Heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death
-
Permanent damage to the heart and brain
-
Respiratory failure or nasal tissue destruction
-
Severe depression, psychosis, and mood instability
-
Increased risk of infectious diseases if injected
Cocaine and the Brain
Cocaine directly disrupts the brain’s reward system by preventing dopamine from being reabsorbed, causing it to build up between nerve cells. Over time, this alters brain chemistry, reduces natural pleasure responses, and leads to tolerance, cravings, and compulsive use.
Common effects include:
-
Intense euphoria and increased energy
-
Agitation, anxiety, and paranoia
-
Impaired concentration and judgment
-
Elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature
-
Loss of appetite and sleep disturbances
-
Hallucinations and panic
Treatment for Cocaine Addiction
Cocaine addiction is serious but treatable with professional care. Recovery requires addressing both the physical dependence and the underlying psychological factors driving use.
At Athena Behavioral Health, cocaine treatment begins with medically supervised detox when appropriate, followed by individualized therapy that may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), brain-focused treatment modalities, and support for co-occurring mental health conditions. Our comprehensive approach is designed to restore balance, reduce relapse risk, and support long-term recovery.
If you or someone you love is struggling with cocaine use, Athena Behavioral Health is here to help. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options and take the first step toward recovery.
