PCP (Phencyclidine)

PCP Abuse and Effects

Phencyclidine (PCP), also known as angel dust, is a powerful dissociative drug originally developed as an anesthetic in the 1950s. Its medical use was discontinued due to severe side effects, including agitation, anxiety, and hallucinations. While PCP’s peak recreational use occurred in the late 1970s, it continues to appear in illicit drug markets today—often disguised as ecstasy, MDMA, or other club drugs.PCP is especially dangerous due to its unpredictable effects and long duration. Depending on how it is used, its effects can last from several hours to an entire day, increasing the risk of overdose, psychosis, and accidental injury.

PCP is typically sold as a crystalline powder that may be swallowed, smoked, or dissolved into liquids. Users may smoke it on tobacco or marijuana, a practice sometimes referred to as “wet” or “sherm.” Because PCP is illegally manufactured, its potency and composition vary widely.Common effects of PCP abuse include:

  • Hallucinations and severe disorientation

  • Depersonalization and emotional numbness

  • Panic, paranoia, or terror

  • Rigid muscles, nausea, vomiting

  • Dangerous fluctuations in blood pressure and body temperature

Behavioral warning signs may include erratic or aggressive behavior, slurred speech without alcohol use, rapid mood swings, and a false sense of invulnerability.

Long-term PCP use has been linked to memory problems, speech impairment, flashbacks, chronic psychosis, and increased suicide risk.

Treatment for PCP Addiction

PCP addiction is serious but treatable with professional care. Without treatment, continued use can result in long-lasting psychological damage and dangerous behavior.

At Athena Behavioral Health, PCP treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment and medically supervised detox when appropriate. From there, patients transition into individualized treatment that addresses both substance use and underlying mental health conditions. Care may include evidence-based therapies, trauma-informed treatment, brain-focused modalities, and holistic support.

Athena’s structured and supportive environment helps individuals safely stabilize, regain clarity, and build the tools needed for long-term recovery.

If you or someone you love is struggling with PCP use, Athena Behavioral Health is here to help. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options and next steps.
