Healing Beyond the Surface

We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens—also known as psychedelics—are a class of substances that alter perception, mood, and thought. While some have been used historically in cultural or spiritual practices, these drugs can cause dangerous psychological effects, including delusions and visual or auditory hallucinations. In some cases, individuals may experience severe anxiety, panic, or lose touch with reality, leading to risky or harmful behavior. Repeated use can result in psychological dependence and long-term mental health issues.

Common Types of Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens may be naturally occurring or synthetic. Common examples include:

  • LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide)

  • MDMA (Ecstasy)

  • PCP (phencyclidine)

  • Psilocybin (magic mushrooms)

  • Mescaline (peyote)

Effects of Hallucinogen Abuse

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), hallucinogenic effects can begin within 20–90 minutes and last up to 12 hours. Common effects include:

  • Altered perception of reality

  • Visual or auditory hallucinations

  • Increased heart rate

  • Nausea

  • Euphoria or intense anxiety

  • Delusions or acute psychosis

Treatment for Hallucinogen Abuse

Some hallucinogens, such as PCP, can be addictive, while others may lead to tolerance and psychological dependence. Attempting to stop use without support can result in cravings, irritability, fatigue, and emotional distress.

At Odyssey Behavioral Health, treatment for hallucinogen abuse focuses on stabilization, psychological support, and addressing underlying mental health concerns. Care may include detox support, behavioral therapies, and ongoing treatment to help individuals regain stability and reduce the risk of relapse.

If you or a loved one is struggling with hallucinogen use, Odyssey Behavioral Health offers comprehensive, individualized treatment options. Contact our 24/7 helpline to learn more.
