ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS
Healing Beyond the Surface
We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.
Anabolic Steroid Abuse
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic versions of the male hormone testosterone. Medically, they may be prescribed to treat conditions such as delayed puberty, hormonal deficiencies, or diseases that cause muscle loss, including cancer and HIV. Outside of medical supervision, however, steroids are frequently misused to increase muscle mass, strength, or physical appearance—often in dangerously high doses.
Steroids are commonly abused through injection, though some are taken orally or applied as gels or creams. Commonly misused steroids include oral forms such as Anadrol and Winstrol, and injectable forms like Deca-Durabolin and Equipoise. Many individuals who misuse steroids do so to cope with body image issues, trauma, or emotional distress—not just athletic performance goals.
Signs and Effects of Steroid Abuse
Short-term effects may include:
-
Irritability and aggression (“roid rage”)
-
Poor judgment and impulsivity
-
Mood swings or paranoia
Long-term steroid abuse can cause serious health consequences, including:
-
Heart, liver, and kidney damage
-
Hormonal imbalances
-
Breast development in men and facial hair growth in women
-
Shrinking of testicles and infertility
-
Stunted growth in adolescents
-
Increased risk of HIV or hepatitis from injections
Although steroids do not produce a traditional “high,” they affect the brain’s reward system and can lead to dependence and withdrawal, often marked by severe depression, fatigue, sleep problems, and cravings.
Treatment for Steroid Addiction
Steroid abuse is a serious medical and mental health issue that requires professional care. Effective treatment addresses both the physical effects of steroid use and the underlying psychological factors that drive continued misuse.
At Athena Behavioral Health, steroid addiction treatment may include medically supervised detox, individual therapy, counseling, and evidence-based behavioral therapies. Our approach is individualized, supportive, and designed to promote both physical healing and long-term emotional stability.
