Healing Beyond the Surface
We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.

Drug abuse fundamentally alters the brain. Prolonged or even short-term substance misuse can change neural pathways, creating new connections while weakening or eliminating others. Drugs and alcohol disrupt the normal balance of neurotransmitters, causing certain brain cells to overproduce or underproduce chemical signals. Research also shows that chronic substance use can lead to shrinkage in specific areas of the brain over time.
Because of these significant changes, when substances are removed, the brain and body often struggle to restore balance. This
disruption is why individuals who stop using
drugs commonly experience withdrawal symptoms
and, in many cases, require medically
supervised detox to safely and effectively stabilize.
What are Withdrawal Symptoms
Withdrawal symptoms are the uncomfortable physical and psychological effects that occur when a person stops using drugs or alcohol after prolonged misuse. The type, severity, and duration of these symptoms vary depending on the substance involved, the length of use, and the individual’s physiology.

Withdrawal symptoms are a range of physical and mental discomforts that can occur when an individual stops using drugs or alcohol after extended use. These symptoms differ in intensity and duration depending on the substance used, the length of misuse, and the person’s overall health.
What is Detox Treatment
Detoxification treatment—often referred to simply as detox—is designed to help individuals safely manage withdrawal symptoms as the body clears drugs or alcohol from its system.
When people attempt to quit substances without professional support, they often face intense cravings and severe physical and psychological symptoms on their own. Detox professionals are specially trained to reduce the discomfort of withdrawal while closely monitoring a patient’s health and safety throughout the process.
At Athena, we offer both traditional detox and Nutritionally Assisted Detox (NAD).
Traditional detox, also known as medically assisted detox, uses carefully prescribed medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and reduce health risks. Patients are continuously monitored by medical professionals and receive individualized treatment based on the substance used and their specific needs. Medically assisted detox is available at all of our treatment facilities.
Nutritionally Assisted Detox (NAD) is an advanced detox approach that includes intravenous therapy containing vitamins, amino acids, and other nutrients designed to support and accelerate the brain’s natural healing process. NAD detox is currently offered exclusively at our San Clemente, California treatment facility.
Beyond Detoxification
For many individuals, professionally supervised detox is a critical foundation for long-term sobriety.
However, detox is only the beginning of the recovery journey. In addition to offering medically supervised detox, Sovereign provides a comprehensive treatment program for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Following detoxification, patients transition into an individualized, evidence-based rehabilitation program that may include cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, equine therapy, art therapy, yoga, meditation, physical fitness, and nutritional counseling—all designed to support lasting recovery and overall well-being.
