ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS

Healing Beyond the Surface

We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth)

Methamphetamine—commonly known as crystal meth, ice, glass, tweak, or speed—is one of the most addictive and destructive stimulant drugs in the world. It is a powerful central nervous system stimulant that increases energy and alertness, suppresses appetite, and produces intense euphoria.

While methamphetamine has limited medical use under the prescription name Desoxyn (for conditions such as ADHD or narcolepsy), illicit meth is far more potent and dangerous. Even pharmaceutical forms carry significant risks of dependence, psychological harm, and physical deterioration.

People misuse meth for reasons such as the intense “rush,” prolonged high that can last several hours, rapid weight loss, or as an escape from emotional pain, trauma, or extreme stress.

Meth can be smoked, snorted, injected, or swallowed. Repeated use quickly leads to tolerance, dependence, and severe health consequences.

Common signs of meth abuse include:

  • Severe anxiety, agitation, and paranoia

  • Meth-induced psychosis and hallucinations

  • Insomnia and extreme energy followed by crashes

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure

  • Loss of appetite and dramatic weight loss

  • “Meth mouth” and poor dental health

  • Skin sores from compulsive picking

  • Aggressive or erratic behavior

Signs and Effects of Meth Abuse

Chronic meth use causes lasting damage to brain areas responsible for emotion, memory, and decision-making. Long-term users often experience cognitive decline, mood instability, and difficulty learning or controlling impulses.

Treatment for Meth Addiction

Meth addiction profoundly affects both the brain and body, making professional treatment essential. Recovery requires more than stopping drug use—it requires addressing the neurological and psychological damage meth causes.

At Athena Behavioral Health, meth addiction treatment begins with medically supervised detox when appropriate, followed by individualized care that targets both substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Treatment may include evidence-based therapies, cognitive and brain-focused modalities, trauma-informed care, and holistic support.

Athena’s comprehensive approach is designed to restore brain health, rebuild coping skills, and support long-term recovery.

If you or someone you love is struggling with methamphetamine use, Athena Behavioral Health is here to help. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options and next steps.
