ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS

Healing Beyond the Surface

We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.

Salvia divinorum, commonly referred to as salvia, is a psychoactive plant known for producing brief but extremely intense hallucinations, most often when smoked or vaporized. While salvia has been used historically by certain Indigenous groups for spiritual and ceremonial purposes, its modern recreational use has increased, particularly among adolescents and young adults.

Salvia is often promoted as a “natural” or harmless substance, but this perception is misleading. The drug can cause profound dissociation, loss of reality, and dangerous behavior in a very short period of time. Videos circulating on social media frequently depict individuals under salvia’s influence exhibiting confusion, panic, loss of coordination, or complete detachment from their surroundings.

At Athena Behavioral Health, we recognize that even substances perceived as low-risk can have serious psychological consequences, especially when used repeatedly or alongside other substances.

Symptoms of Salvia Abuse

Salvia acts rapidly and intensely, often overwhelming the user within seconds. Episodes may involve complete loss of awareness, memory gaps, or extreme emotional reactions. Because of its dissociative effects, individuals under the influence may unknowingly place themselves in dangerous situations.

How Salvia Is Used

Salvia is most commonly consumed as dried green leaves, though it is also available as concentrated extracts or liquid tinctures. Users may:

  • Smoke or vaporize the leaves

  • Chew the plant material

  • Use liquid concentrates

Salvia Abuse & Treatment at Athena Behavioral Health

Common symptoms of salvia abuse include:

  • Depersonalization or detachment from self

  • Extreme mood changes, including panic and fear

  • Intense visual, auditory, or tactile hallucinations

  • Loss of coordination and motor control

  • Memory impairment or blackouts

  • Psychotic or delusional thinking

  • Compulsive or repeated use

  • Risk-taking or unsafe behavior while intoxicated

  • Lasting psychological distress, including psychosis in vulnerable individuals

  • Visual disturbances or altered perception

Although research remains limited, current data suggests that salvia may not cause traditional physical dependence. However, psychological dependence, compulsive use, and lasting mental health effects have been reported, particularly in individuals with underlying psychiatric vulnerabilities.Salvia’s legal status varies widely by state, adding to public confusion around its safety. Regardless of legality, salvia should not be considered harmless.

Treatment at Athena Behavioral Health May Include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric and psychological assessment

  • Medically supported stabilization when needed

  • Individual, group, and family therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Experiential therapies such as mindfulness, movement, and creative therapies

  • Dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions

Effects of Salvia Abuse

Salvia’s effects can vary significantly based on dose, environment, mental state, and prior substance use. Its onset is rapid, and effects typically peak within minutes, lasting up to 30 minutes. Despite the short duration, the intensity can be severe.

Research indicates that salvia interacts with opioid receptors in the brain, though not the same receptors affected by traditional opioids. The long-term neurological effects of salvia remain unclear, but studies suggest potential risks including:

  • Memory impairment

  • Hallucinogen-like flashbacks

  • Persistent perceptual changes

  • Increased risk of psychosis

  • Heightened suicide risk in vulnerable individuals

There have been documented cases of severe injury and suicide associated with salvia use, underscoring the need for caution and clinical awareness.
