ODYSSEY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTERS
Healing Beyond the Surface
We are committed to guiding individuals toward long-term sobriety by treating the underlying causes of substance use disorders — not simply managing short-term symptoms.
Our structured, evidence-based approach fosters stability, resilience, and sustainable recovery.
Marijuana (Cannabis)
Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant and contains THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive compound responsible for its mind-altering effects. Commonly known as weed, pot, or cannabis, marijuana can be smoked, vaped, or consumed in edible form.
While often perceived as harmless—especially as laws around marijuana have relaxed—regular use can lead to tolerance, dependence, and addiction, particularly with high-potency products. Hashish and concentrates are significantly stronger than traditional marijuana and carry higher risks.
Effects and Risks of Marijuana Abuse
THC increases dopamine levels in the brain, producing relaxation or euphoria. With repeated use, the brain adapts, which can reduce motivation, impair memory, and lead to compulsive use.
Common effects of marijuana abuse include:
-
Impaired judgment and coordination
-
Difficulty concentrating or learning
-
Memory problems
-
Anxiety or paranoia
-
Increased heart rate
-
Loss of motivation
-
Dependence and loss of control
In adolescents and young adults, marijuana use has been linked to learning difficulties, emotional blunting, and behavioral issues.
Addiction and Withdrawal
Although marijuana withdrawal is typically not life-threatening, stopping use after long-term or heavy use may cause:
-
Irritability
-
Anxiety
-
Sleep problems
-
Decreased appetite
-
Cravings
These symptoms can make quitting difficult without support, especially when marijuana use is combined with other
substances or mental health conditions.
Treatment for Marijuana Addiction
Marijuana addiction is treatable, and recovery often focuses on behavioral change rather than intensive medical detox.
At Athena Behavioral Health, marijuana treatment is tailored to the individual and may include outpatient or intensive outpatient care, counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and support for co-occurring mental health conditions. Treatment helps individuals understand their patterns of use, build healthier coping skills, and regain motivation and balance.
If you or a loved one is struggling with marijuana use, Athena Behavioral Health offers compassionate, evidence-based care. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options and next steps.
