Fentanyl

Fentanyl is an extremely powerful synthetic opioid originally developed for medical pain management and anesthesia. Illegally manufactured fentanyl is frequently mixed into heroin or counterfeit opioid pills—often without the user’s knowledge. Because fentanyl is 80–100 times stronger than morphine, even very small amounts can lead to fatal overdose. On the illicit market, fentanyl may be sold as powder, pills, or blotter paper and is often referred to by street names such as China White, Tango and Cash, Jackpot, or Murder 8.

Signs and Dangers of Fentanyl Abuse

Fentanyl’s short duration and extreme potency make it highly addictive. Repeated use rapidly leads to tolerance, dependence, and increased overdose risk.Common signs of fentanyl abuse include:Drowsiness and confusionSuppressed or shallow breathingNausea, vomiting, and loss of appetiteSevere constipationDepression or mood changesSweating, shaking, or sleep disturbancesOverdose warning signs may include pinpoint pupils, clammy skin, seizures, dangerously slow breathing, low blood pressure, or unconsciousness. Immediate medical attention is critical.

How Fentanyl Affects the Brain

Fentanyl binds to opioid receptors in the brain, blocking pain while also flooding the reward system with dopamine. While this creates temporary feelings of euphoria and relaxation, it also suppresses essential brain functions such as breathing, alertness, and emotional regulation—making overdose especially likely.

Treatment for Fentanyl Addiction

Fentanyl addiction requires professional medical care. Emergency interventions such as naloxone (Narcan) can reverse overdoses, but long-term recovery depends on comprehensive treatment.

At Athena Behavioral Health, fentanyl treatment begins with medically supervised detox to safely stabilize the body. From there, patients transition into individualized treatment that addresses both addiction and any underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Athena’s approach focuses on healing the whole person—not just stopping drug use—by combining evidence-based therapies, dual diagnosis care, and ongoing support to reduce relapse risk and support lasting recovery.

If you or someone you love is struggling with fentanyl use, Athena Behavioral Health is here to help. Call our 24/7 helpline to learn more about treatment options.
