Naloxone (Narcan): How This Life-Saving Drug Works and Where to Get It

Naloxone — sold under the brand name Narcan — is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose within minutes. In the midst of the ongoing opioid crisis, naloxone has become one of the most important public health tools available. Every family with a loved one who uses opioids — prescribed or otherwise — should understand what naloxone is, how to use it, and where to get it.

How Naloxone Works

Naloxone works by rapidly binding to opioid receptors in the brain and blocking the effects of opioids. This reverses the life-threatening respiratory depression — slowed or stopped breathing — that causes death during an overdose. It takes effect within 2 to 5 minutes and can restore normal breathing almost immediately. Naloxone is not a treatment for addiction — it is an emergency rescue medication that buys time for emergency services to arrive.

How to Use Naloxone

Naloxone is available as a nasal spray (the most common form) or as an injectable. To use the nasal spray: lay the person on their back, tilt their head back, insert the nozzle into one nostril, and press the plunger firmly. If there is no response within 2 to 3 minutes, administer a second dose in the other nostril. Always call 911 immediately — even if the person revives, they need emergency medical attention because naloxone wears off within 30 to 90 minutes and the opioid may still be in their system.

Where to Get Naloxone

Naloxone is available without a prescription at most major pharmacies including CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart. It is also distributed free of charge at many community health centers, needle exchange programs, and harm reduction organizations. If a loved one uses opioids — whether for pain management or otherwise — having naloxone on hand could mean the difference between life and death.
